Isn't that a mandola?
Looks a little large to be a mandolin.

(it sounds great, BTW)

Yes. Mandola, Octave Mandola, Mandocello, ... all name the same instrument.

Depends on where you live. In the common US terminology, a mandola is to a mandolin what a viola is to a violin; slightly bigger, a tad longer scale length, and tuned a fifth lower. (The Brits sometimes call them tenor mandolas). Over here in continental Europe, some folks call the octave mandolin a mandola. The modern mandocello usually has a scale length about the same as a octave mandolin (and not an octave plus a fifth lower, as the cello does compared to the violin), as does bouzouki, more or less. But not always, and the they can be tuned many ways. And so on. So no, they are not all the same instrument, and they are capable of a bit more than the blues. If you are unfamiliar with much of this, head on over to Mandolin Cafe for a crash course, the CBOM section (Citterns, Bouzoukis (Zouks), Octaves, Dolas and Mandocellos) is a good start.

The guitar shaped Mandola is what I have been building with the mandola fret board , however I have been tuning it to a Mandolin . Thats what has made it unique and people have found they like to play as well as the sound.

Molds are fine, but it looks to me like someone was re-sawing wood and gluing things. :?:

If you guys accept me and Todd writes me back :D

I am not sure I can make Saturday - but I may be up for Friday - that was my planned day to pick up some curly maple -

By the way - if Todd and Filippo make twin instruments - I suggest they have to post a video of them playing both together as well. Likewise Chris can join in and I will gladly volunteer my as of yet nonexistant mandolin skills, to make a group challenge build jam session.

Not sure we'd even use those sets or neck blanks milled out this weekend...we have the real shopping trip later this week...our supplier runs poplar prices for killer curly and has rosewood QS shorts (20"-24") for a few bucks each (3-4 fretboards plus a couple bridges and a head plate or two). Hate to think what happens when the owner wakes up and finds that a) it's 2012, and b) we are in the fourth year of a major recession...could suck for us.

Wish I had a place like that around here....

Have fun guys!

nah ... Friday was my idea - but I have not spoken to Todd or heard back - no problem -
although, if invited, I may be able to spring up Saturday morning - but not sure yet (family stuff), just that Friday works best.
Worst case for me, I can grab some curly local to me up here in B'more.

What? Sorry, I can't hear you. I am too busy protecting the only thing that allows me to HEAR my instruments when they are done.

I'm so sorry to have offered a friendly reminder about shop safety. I now see my wrong doing and will refrain from ever stepping so brutally on so many toes. In the future I will follow your example and stick with over reactions and crass comments. Sorry again.

The last goat Tony posted needed a different kind of protection. . .
